A (Short) History of the English Language


Scholars would disagree, but I would say:
It began here, in Freiburg.
Somewhere near the intersection
of two paths and a point in time.
Let's say: on the Schloßberg.
In silence.
Where all languages begin.
And I suddenly became
fluently speechless
in several languages simultaneously.
I've been gathering words ever since,
In a language that probably resembles
English, but I can't be sure,
because you're leaving now,
and when you're gone,
I won't know where to look for the meaning.
